GAS or ELECTRIC?

The decision on buying a new gas or electric water heater normally depends on the type of power already available in your home or business. It not uncommon for some rural areas to not have direct access to natural gas, so in that case, electric may be your only option (although there are propane and solar options but we'll save you the confusion for now). Fortunately, most areas these days, especially in Las Vegas and Henderson, have access to both gas and, of course, electricity.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding which option is best for you:

GAS WATER HEATERS

PROS:
  • Quicker heating and higher recovery rate. Ideal for larger families or businesses
  • Lower operating expenses. Gas generally costs less than electricity
  • They work during power outages. You will have hot water even when there is no electricity

CONS:
  • Higher initial price. Their purchase price and installation costs are typically higher
  • More complex installation process. Extra piping for proper ventilation - also limits the location options
  • Risk of gas explosion. We suggest regular maintenance to prevent this from happening

ELECTRIC WATER HEATERS

PROS:
  • Lower initial price. Normally cheaper than gas water heaters
  • More energy efficient. Water is not continuously being heated
  • Generally safer.  No risks of explosion since they do not run on gas

CONS:
  • Longer heating time and recovery rate. Less ideal for larger families or commercial use
  • Higher operating costs. Electricity is generally costs more than gas does
  • Will not operate during power outages. They depend solely on electricity unlike their gas counterparts

CONVENTIONAL or TANKLESS Water Heaters?

When replacing your water heater, choosing the right one will not only impact your quality of life, but your wallet as well. There are two main types of water heaters to choose from: conventional water heaters (also known as tank or storage water heaters), and tankless water heaters. Since both types can run on various power sources, such as electric or gas, deciding on one that best fits your needs can be tricky. To start, there are a number of factors that you will want to consider, such as cost, efficiency, and longevity.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding which option is best for you:

CONVENTIONAL WATER HEATERS

PROS:
  • Lower purchase price. Normally less than half cost of modern tankless water heaters (under $1,000)
  • Lower installation costs. They normally take less time to install, making installation less expensive
  • Lower maintenance costs. They are less complex and are typically cheaper to repair

CONS:
  • Higher energy costs. They continuously heat and reheat water even when not in use - using more energy.
  • Shorter lifespan. Their average lifespan is 8-12 years, compared 20+ years for tankless water heaters
  • Takes up more space. They are much larger than their tankless water heater counterparts.

TANKLESS WATER HEATERS

PROS:
  • Lower energy costs. Extremely energy-efficient using up to 30% less energy than tank water heaters
  • Hot water on demand. You'll never run out or need to wait for hot water.
  • They last longer. They can last well over 20 years - twice as long as conventional water heaters!
  • They take up less space. Tankless water heaters are drastically smaller than traditional tank water heaters

CONS:
  • Higher purchase price. generally the tankless water heater cost can be twice as much as tank units ($500 - $2,000+)
  • Output challenged. Although they heat water instantly, you may need a bigger unit to handle higher volumes
  • Higher installation cost. Transitioning to a tankless water heater may require additional plumbing services

FAQs

When should i replace my water heater?
While we will do everything we can to repair your water heater and avoid replacement, there will be a time when things are beyond repair and a new water heater will be your best option.

Here are some signs that your water heater will need to be replaced:

  • Hot water running out quickly -  if you find yourself never making it through a shower without the water turning cold, it could be a sign of sediment build up in your tank and overall wear and tear beyond repair.
  • Rusty hot water - the interior of your water heater tank could be rusting. Anode rod replacements help with this but there will be a time when replacing your old water heater with a new one is your best option.
  • Leaking water heater - If you notice a pool of water underneath your tank, you may have a crack somewhere in the tank itself and will need a water heater replacement.
  • Your water heater is over 10 years old - traditional tank water heaters are only built to last between 8-12 years on average. If you notice overall performance continuously dropping, it is time to look at replacement options.

While these are some of the signs that you will need a water heater replacement, it is possible that you will just need to replace or repair a part instead. We advise you to skip the guesswork and have one of our licensed professionals advise your best options. Give us a call at (725)215-7667 for a free water heater repair estimate.
How long is my water heater supposed to last?
The lifespan of your water heater greatly depends on both the type of water heater that you have and how well you maintain it.

Traditional tank water heaters last between 8-12 years on average. For newer tankless water heaters, you can expect them to last well over 20 years if they are well maintained.
DO YOU OFFER EMERGENCY WATER HEATER REPAIR?
We know all too well how urgent emergency water heater repairs can be. Suddenly 10 minutes seems much longer when you are showering in ice cold water. A major leaking water heater could lead to more damages if not taken care of right away.

This is why you can call or email us for a water heater repair 24/7. Some Las Vegas water heater repair companies simply won't take on emergency jobs - we aren't one of them. Whether you need 24 hour water heater repair, or a consultation on how to go about a new water heater replacement, we can help.

5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A NEW WATER HEATER REPLACEMENT
So your old water heater is beyond repair and you are ready to buy a replacement. The process can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming. Here are 5 things that you should consider when making your decision:
  1. Fuel Source - electric and gas are the most common fuel sources for Las Vegas water heaters, both having their pros and cons
  2. Energy Efficiency - more energy-efficient water heaters mean more savings on your energy bills (it adds up quickly)!
  3. Flow Capacity - this determines how much hot water is available to you at any given time and for how long
  4. Space Available - you will need a dedicated space for your water heater. If space is very limited, you may want to consider a tankless water heater replacement
  5. Price - Some options cost less upfront but have higher hot water heater repair costs, while other options may cost more initially, but have lower energy costs.

Save yourself the guesswork. We will walk you through the best makes and models that fits your unique water heating needs for your home or business, so you have confidence knowing that you are making the best choice.
